After designing your learning objectives and before developing any content, you must plan what types of instructional methods you will use. It is easy to understand why many instructors feel the desire to replicate their in-class methods. However, the course needs to be redesigned with online environment in mind, and created to move from teacher-centered (lecture) to student-centered with active learning methods. Begin with the end in mind (what are the learning outcomes?). Ask yourself, "What will student learning look like and how will my students get there?" Course design should "focus on interactivity, not content. It is the pedagogy and not technology critical to the success of online course" (Palloff and Pratt, Lessons from the Cyberspace Classroom, 2001).
