We will be covering basic principles of good design throughout the week:
NEAT (Objectives & Alignment; Organization):
PROJECT RUNWAY (Designing Assessments)
RECIPE FOR SUCCESS (Building Community)
Find ways to establish your personality online:
THE APPRENTICE (Facilitation & Feedback)
Provide very clear instructions for all activities, content and assessment. Explain to the students
MINDGAMES (Engaging Learners)
Find ways to establish your personality online:
- Use module prerequisites to control the release of information (content provided at the time/place the students need it). This will help build scaffolding for the students and not let them get too far behind in the course. Don’t allow students to move forward until a learning outcome has been reached.
- Create graphic organizers for students who learn things visually.
- Unit checklists for students can be very useful.
- incorporate routines with course activities/deadlines
- have a consistent schedule for in-person classes and/or online assignments - this is important whether you are teaching face-to-face, hybrid, or online.
PROJECT RUNWAY (Designing Assessments)
- Create clear learning objectives, and make sure that your assessments are aligned to those objectives
- Design frequent and early opportunities for formative assessment while there is still time to make needed changes to instruction
- Develop and provide scoring rubrics and guides. Canvas’ SpeedGrader (rubrics tool) makes your life much easier!
- Provide models of the type of work that you are looking for

- how what they are doing relates to the learning objectives
- describe the content, resources and links provided
- Unit checklists for students can be very useful!
- Provide models of the type of work that you are looking for
- Anticipate “crisis points” of the concepts and their presentation. Where do you anticipate students struggling and how will you help them overcome?
- Supply students with all needed resources with clear explanations of when and how they should be used.
- Plan on providing timely feedback to all student inquiries and assignments AND STICK TO THE STATED PLAN!
- Make yourself available!! You can do this online through email, Canvas conferences or chat, or Skype
